Based on the teachings of and dedicated to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)

"Baba, baba, which festival is everyone preparing for?" Krishna asked His father Nanda Maharaja. "We are preparing to worship Lord Indra, the god of rain," His father replied.

Next day, "Baba, Baba," Krishna again nagged His father. "Baba it is the duty of King Indra to give us rain. We are living here in these forests near the hills. Let us worship Govardhana instead."

Nanda Maharaja agreed. As instructed by Lord Krishna, they made huge mountains of food. There were hot soups and cold sweet rice; baked cakes and fancy fried cakes, and so many varieties of sweets. There was also a lot of milk, curd, butter and ghee.

The brahmanas chanted vedic hymns and the people, along with their cows and oxen, circumbulated Govardhana Hill. Suddenly a huge form appeared saying, "I am Govardhana Hill," and ate all the offerings.

Krishna bowed down to this great person, instructing the others to also do so. Later, everybody honored the prasadam.

When Indra heard the news, he began fuming. "How dare they stop my worship and worship a hill instead? Who is this Krishna to stop my worship?

Indra called upon his servant clouds and ordered them to pour thunder showers on Vrindavana.

The dark sky blazed with lightning. The clouds roared with thunder. Hailstones hurled down. The ground became covered with water. The animals shivered from the heavy wind.

Indra was astonished but continued to harass the hill with thunderbolts and rain. The people were so happy to be with Krishna. They gazed upon Him with love. They sang His glories forgetting hunger, thirst and sleep.

After one week, Indra recognized the Supremacy of Lord Krishna and stopped the rain. Seeing the sun shining brightly again Krishna asked everyone to go back home.

Krishna put down the hill and His parents embraced Him with great love. The demigods showered flowers on Lord Krishna from the sky.

Indra, feeling very ashamed of himself, took shelter of the cow, Mother Surabhi. Surabhi-mata requested Krishna to forgive Indra.

Then, as ordered by Lord Brahma, Indra performed Krishna's abhishek with Airavata pouring heavenly Ganga water with his six trunks and Surabhi pouring her pure milk.
