A disturbance was created formerly by the demons headed by Hiranyaksa, and the earth lost its weightless condition and fell down into the Garbhodaka Ocean. The Lord, as maintainer of the whole creation of the material world, therefore assumed the gigantic form of a boar with a proportional snout in order to lift the earth from within the water of the Garbhodaka Ocean. When the Lord dove into the ocean to pick up the earth, Hiranyaksa challenged Him, and thus the Lord killed the demon by piercing him with His tusk.
