About this item
Introducing the new Tilak Mridanga! The Mridanga is made from hard wearing fiberglass and is built to last. On the body of each is the famous "Tilak" symbol that distinguishes the Vaishnava. This will help you to remember the spiritual and service aspect of playing the Mridanga.
The Highest Quality AND The Most Affordable
After years of research and development the new fiberglass Tilak Mridanga has been produced to replace the now mostly unavavilable Balarama Mridangas.
The Balarama Mridanga was first produced at New Dwarka (ISKCON Los Angeles) to solve a big problem with the clay Mridangas from India. The clay Mridangas are very fragile. A slight impact will cause them to break. To avoid this problem the fiberglass "Balarama Mridanga" was invented. It was a grand success and now the new and improved Tilak Mridanga is now available at almost half the price of where the Balarama Mridangas were priced.
By improving the production methods and producing the drums in a large quantity we have been able to both improve the quality of the Mridangas significantly and dramatically reduce the price at the same time.
Tilak Mridangas are available 3 colors:
- Varaha Red
- Chaitanya Golden Yellow
- Gopal Krishna Blue
The Tilak Mridanga is quickly becoming the preferred instrument for Sankirtan and temple Kirtan alike. There are many advantages of these high quality fiberglass Mridangas:
- With a resonant bass head and a beautiful, crisp treble head, Tilak Mridangas have top-quality sound.
- They are easy to tune, and with the included tuning key you can tune up on the fly.
- Have you ever been out on Harinam Sankirtan and had the weather suddenly change from a beautiful sunny day to what might be best described as a "beautiful" shower? Tilak Mridangas won’t fall apart in the rain!
- The drum holds true and stays in tune regardless of the season.
- The vibrant, glossy finish adds beautiful color to your Harinam party.
- Tilak Mridangas are virtually indestructible, so transporting them is easy. (Some people have reported that an additional benefit of the Tilak Mridanga can be found when travelling by plane. You can easily remove the big/bass head of the drum and fill it with some of your clothes and other belongings, reducing the volume of your luggage and sometimes even saving you money on airfare!)
** NOTE ** You can hear in the video how much more the Tilak mrdanga sounds like a clay drum than previous fibreglass mrdangas.
Whats the bottom line?
A Tilak Mridanga will be a great friend and companion if…
- You want an instrument that sounds great in any weather.
- You travel a lot.
- You enjoy Harinam and refuse to let little things like weather get in your way.
- You want a rugged instrument that can stand up to the beating of a Ratha Yatra or big festival Kirtan.
- You want an indestructible instrument to give to a young child so he can channel his energy toward Krishna (get them a small sized Tilak Mridanga).

Q: Hare Krsna! Jaya Prabhupada! My mrdanga arrived today. The sound is flat and muffled, as though the drum has something inside. Is this so? Should I do something to prepare it for playing? Your servant, Deva-Sanga

If the sound of the drum is a little flat it probably just needs to be tightened. This is done simply by lifting the rubber ring around the heads up to expose the screws on the metal tension ring. These screws can be tightened evenly around the head with an allen wrench, until the sound is as you like. see less

Read more I am astounded with the amazing customer service and generosity. The shipping in India can be pretty rough and so when my mridanga package arrived in Puri India (shipped from the Philippines) it had a small crack in it. I wrote a message of complaint and immediately I got a response asking if I'd like to be reimbursed with cash or a free new mridanga. I chose a new mridanga and this time it shipped with no problem. They even paid the $50 shipping cost! The Mataji who I dealt with was very helpful and kind. I have never seen such good customer service elsewhere. The mridanga is very light. Both sides of the mridanga are very loud and sounds almost just like a real clay mridanga. This is especially essential for places which have humid climate (humidity loosens the leather make clay mridangas go completely flat) or places which have a very dry climate (dryness tightens the leather making the bass side of the mridanga very high pitch). Here in India during the summer time the mridanga would sound too high and in the winter time it would be too low to the point of even going totally flat. But this Tilak Mridanga has solved all these common mridanga problems. Oh and during Ratha-yatra time in Puri they shoot you with these huge water guns because it is so hot. All the clay mridanga players had to cover their mridangas with cloth and guard it but me and my Tilak mridanga were getting drenched with water with no problem and I could continue playing loud. How awesome is that? A water-proof mridanga whose sound stays the same throughout all weather conditions! It is super easy to tune as well with the little wrench that is so intelligently placed on the shoulder strap.Read less
